Rubiaceae - Madder

Dicotyledonous, sympetalous. The leaves are opposite, simple, entire, with stipules, and the corolla is sympetalous. It is distinguished from closely related families by the fact that the ovary is inferior. It is broadly divided into two subfamilies, Cinchonainae and Rubiinae, based on the number of ovules in the ovary locus, but there are many different theories. Well-known plants include the coffee tree, cinchona, ipecac, gardenia, and balsam, as well as dye plants such as madder and Japanese laurel. It is a large family consisting of about 500 genera and 6,000 species, and most are found in the tropics, but they are also found in temperate zones and rarely in cold zones.

The APG classification also includes the Rubiaceae family, and the Scutellaria family is also included in the Rubiaceae family. According to 2018 data from this classification, there are approximately 610 genera and 13,000 species, of which 35 genera can be found in Japan.

双子葉植物、合弁花類。葉は対生し、単葉で全縁、托葉(たくよう)があり、花冠は合弁。子房が下位などで近縁の科と区別される。子房室中の胚珠(はいしゅ)の数により、キナノキ亜科とアカネ亜科に2大別するが、異説も多い。よく知られるものにコーヒーノキ、キナノキ、トコン、クチナシ、ハクチョウゲなどがあり、アカネ、ヤエヤマアオキなど染料植物もある。約500属6000種からなる大きな科で、多くは熱帯に分布するが、温帯にもあり、まれに寒帯にも分布する。

　APG分類でもアカネ科とされ、ヤマトグサ科もアカネ科に含められている。この分類による2018年のデータによると約610属1万3000種があり、日本には35属がみられる。
