Hiromitsu Kataoka

Japanese: 片岡寛光 - かたおか・ひろみつ
Hiromitsu Kataoka
Year of death: Tempo 9.1.15 (1838.2.9)
Year of birth: Year of birth unknown. A poet of the late Edo period. Commonly known as Shusuke or Gontaro. Also known by pen names Ikushien, Keiman, Tsutagakiuchi, etc. Son of Ishasho Takamitsu. Adopted into the Kataoka family, a village lord in Sakumacho, Kanda, Edo. Studied waka poetry under Kiyohara Yufu, Murata Harumi, and Murata Harumon. He seems to have maintained a considerable status in the Edo school of poetry, but only fragmentary materials remain. His book, "Ima wa Mukashi," is valuable as it conveys anecdotes about Mishima Jikkan and Gamo Kimpei, who were close to Hiromitsu. It is said that in his later years he went virtually insane and stopped composing waka. A handwritten poem by him is preserved in the Seikado Bunko Library. <References> Maruyama Toshio, "Memorandum of Kataoka Hiromitsu, a Poet in Edo Kanda," "Anecdotes from the Last Years of Mishima Jikkan" ("People in the History of National Learning")
