Dutch ethnologist and sociologist. Traditionally, in Japan, he has been referred to as Sfrieke. He studied under the Islamic scholar Hülgroene at Leiden University, and after obtaining his doctorate, he worked for the Dutch East Indies government office while also teaching anthropology and sociology at the Higher Law School in Batavia (now the Faculty of Law at the University of Indonesia). He was invited to America in 1934-35, and the results of his research during that time were highly praised as that of an "American from abroad." After 1936, he returned to the Netherlands and became professor of colonial ethnology at the University of Amsterdam.

オランダの民族学･社会学者。従来，日本ではスフリーケと呼び慣らわされてきた。ライデン大学のイスラム学者ヒュルフローニェに師事し，学位取得の後，オランダ領東インド政庁に勤務するかたわら，バタビアの高等法律学校(現，インドネシア大学法学部)で，人類学，社会学を講じた。1934‐35年にはアメリカに招かれ，その間の研究の成果は《外来のアメリカ人》として高く評価される。36年以後はオランダに戻り，アムステルダム大学の植民地民族学担当教授に就任。
