Also known as Gladiolus glabra. A genus of the Iridaceae family found mainly in South Africa, with about 60 species. It is an evergreen or deciduous bulbous plant with sword-shaped leaves and spike-like inflorescences at the top of the flower stalk. The flowers are funnel-shaped and have six tepals. Most of the hybrid varieties are cultivated for cut flowers and in flower beds, and are about 60 cm tall with a wide variety of flower colors, including white, peach, orange, red, and purple. They flower from spring to early summer. The overall plant appearance is similar to that of a gladiolus.
