During the Edo period, the person who managed the receipt and sale of goods stored at the storehouses of various feudal domains in Osaka and elsewhere. Initially, storehouse officials dispatched by the domain were in charge of this, but from around the Kanbun era (1661-1673), merchants began to take on the role. These townspeople brewers were usually given rice subsidies (→ stipends) by the domain and treated like samurai, and received commission on the sale of goods stored in the storehouse and made huge speculative profits related to the sales. Many brewers also worked as storekeepers, and some had economic power that surpassed that of daimyo. The Konoike family, who served as brewers in the Okayama, Hiroshima, and Fukuoka domains, Tennojiya in the Matsue, Takamatsu, and Kurume domains, and Hiranoya in the Himeji, Matsuyama, and Kumamoto domains are famous. 江戸時代,大坂などにおかれた諸藩の蔵屋敷で蔵物の出納売却などを管理した人。当初は藩派遣の蔵役人がこれにあたったが,寛文年間 (1661~73) 頃から商人があたるようになった。これら町人蔵元は普通,藩から扶持米 (→扶持 ) を給され武士に準じる扱いを受け,蔵物の売却にあたって口銭を得,また売却に関連して莫大な投機的利潤をあげた。蔵元には掛屋 (かけや) を兼ねる者が多く,大名をしのぐほどの経済的実力をもつ者もあった。岡山藩,広島藩,福岡藩などの蔵元をつとめた鴻池家,同じく松江,高松,久留米諸藩の天王寺屋,姫路,松山,熊本諸藩の平野屋は有名である。
