The family Ardeidae can be broadly divided into herons and night herons. The former comprises the diurnal genera Ardea (illustration), Egretta (illustration) (including the Intermediate Egret (illustration) and Great Egret (illustration)), Bubulcus (illustration), Ardeola (illustration), Butorides (illustration), Agamia (illustration), and Syrigma (illustration), nocturnal night herons including Nycticorax (illustration), Nyctanassa (illustration), Gorsachius (illustration), and Cochlearius ( illustration), as well as the primitive Tigrisoma genus that inhabits tropical jungles, making up the majority of the family Ardeidae. The latter consists of the genera Ixobrychus and Botaurus , which are adapted to life in reed beds.

 サギ科は,真正サギ類とヨシゴイ類とに大別できる。前者はアオサギArdea(イラスト),コサギEgretta(イラスト)(チュウサギ(イラスト),ダイサギ(イラスト)なども含む),アマサギBubulcus(イラスト),アカガシラサギArdeola,ササゴイButorides,アガミサギAgamia,フエフキサギSyrigmaなどの諸属の昼行性サギ類,ゴイサギNycticorax(イラスト),ミノゴイNyctanassa,ミゾゴイGorsachius(イラスト),ヒロハシサギCochleariusなどの属を含む夜行性のゴイサギ類,熱帯のジャングルに生息する原始的なトラフサギ属Tigrisomaなどよりなり,サギ科の大部分を占める。後者はヨシゴイ(イラスト)属Ixobrychusとサンカノゴイ属Botaurusよりなり,ヨシ原の生活に適応している。…
