Ellisiophyllum pinnatum (Wall.) Makino var.reptans (Maxim.) Yamazaki
A perennial herb of the Scrophulariaceae family (illustration) that grows in slightly damp areas on the edges of mountain forests. The leaves that rise diagonally from the creeping stems are deeply lobed and resemble arabesque patterns. The slender stems crawl along the ground, with roots and a leaf emerging at each node. The leaves have long stalks, with the blades 2.5-6 cm long and 2-5 cm wide. In early summer, a single white flower blooms at the end of a slender stalk from the side of the leaf. The corolla is bell-shaped with five lobes. The capsule is spherical, and the stalk is spirally rolled up to place the fruit underground. In winter, the above-ground parts die and the tips of the stems swell to produce dormant buds.
