This massacre of Protestants by Catholics marked the climax of the Wars of Religion. It began in Paris before dawn on the feast day of Saint Barthélemy on August 24, 1572, and spread to other parts of France. Estimates by contemporaries of the number of those killed vary widely, from 2,000 to 100,000 nationwide, but it is a typical example of religious intolerance taken to an extreme form. France had been in the midst of the Wars of Religion since 1562, but the conflict between the old and new factions had been in a lull since around 1570. Symbolizing this, a marriage contract was concluded between the leader of the Protestants, Henry of Navarre (later Henry IV), and Marguerite de Valois (Princess Margot), the sister of Charles IX, and a grand wedding was held in Paris on August 18.
