Housewives' eczema is a disease that often occurs in people who had atopic dermatitis as children. 〈やめたくてもやめられない水仕事で症状が悪化する〉
 水仕事が多い主婦の手に多く発生するのが主婦湿疹(しゅふしっしん)です。とくに20代から40代の主婦によくみられます。そのため、このような症状名がつけられましたが、実際、同様の湿疹は、美容師や寿司職人などの手にもみられます。
 主婦湿疹は、子どものころ、アトピー性皮膚炎だった人に多く起こる病気です。水仕事によって手の脂分(あぶらぶん)が失われ、また皮膚を保護する膜(まく)が薄くなったところへ合成洗剤などの刺激が加わるために発症します。
 最初は手の甲や指などにかゆみをともなう小さな赤い湿疹が現れるだけですが、進行するとしだいにカサカサになり、さらに亀裂を生じる場合もあります。
 水仕事をやめれば症状は軽くなりますが、主婦をはじめ水仕事をやめるわけにはいかない人はたくさんいます。そんな人は、できるだけ冷たい水や熱いお湯ではなく、ぬるま湯を使う、水仕事の際にはゴム手袋をする、洗剤は薄めて使う、水仕事のあとには油性のクリームで脂分を補うなど、手の保護を心がけましょう。

 これらは1つの食品から複合的に摂取することがより効率的です。たとえばノリからはカルシウムやヨードと同時にカロテン(ビタミンA)とB群が摂取できますし、シュンギクやミツバからはカロテンとCが同時に摂取できます。
 このほか、ニンジンやトマト、ダイコンの葉のカロテン、イチゴのCなどもおすすめです。
〈青背の魚、刺激物、アルコールはひかえる〉
○注意すべきこと
 気をつけたいのは、炎症を促進したり、血行をよくしてかゆみを増してしまうような食品です。
 青背の魚、エビやイカ、イクラなどの魚介・魚卵類や、アクの強い食品、そして甘いものや辛いもの、アルコール類のとりすぎはひかえるようにしましょう。
〈ビワの葉の冷湿布が症状を改善する〉
 乾燥したビワの葉を煎(せん)じて煮つめ、冷やしたものを患部に冷湿布すると、炎症が改善します。また、大きい葉10枚ぐらいを袋に入れて入浴するのもいいでしょう。
〈オリーブオイルは超自然派のスキンケア商品〉
 食用油のなかでも、とくに健康によいと評判のオリーブオイル。胃腸の調子をととのえ、動脈硬化を予防する食用油として、最近でこそ日本でも話題になっていますが、地中海地方では古代ギリシャ時代からそのパワーを重視してきました。
 その秘密はオリーブオイルにたっぷり含まれるオレイン酸にあります。とくにエキストラバージン・オリーブオイルには食用油のなかでも群を抜く70%ものオレイン酸が含まれています。オレイン酸が悪玉コレステロールを減らし、善玉コレステロールをふやすため、動脈硬化を予防。また酸化しにくく、熱に強い性質もあり、しかも人間の皮脂(ひし)にもっとも近い組織をもっています。
