German psychologist and one of the leading figures in the Gestalt school of psychology. Born in Berlin, he was a student of Stumpf at the University of Berlin. Along with Köhler, he also served as a subject in Wertheimer's research on motion vision, which was the starting point of Gestalt psychology. One of his early works was The Fundamentals of Mental Development: An Introduction to Child Psychology (1921). In 1924 he moved to the United States and became a professor at Smith College. He made early efforts to introduce Gestalt psychology to American psychologists. His English book Principles of Gestalt Psychology (1935) is a systematic and comprehensive explanation of Gestalt psychology, and made a particularly great contribution in introducing German-speaking scholarship to the English-speaking world.
