The largest electronics manufacturer in Europe, based in the Netherlands. Abbreviated as Philips. Headquarters in Eindhoven. Its predecessor was Philips & Co., founded in 1891 by Gerard Leonard Frederik Philips (1858-1942) for the purpose of producing incandescent light bulbs. In 1912 the company took on its current name (which literally translates to Philips Incandescent Light Bulb Company). In 1914 G. Holst opened a laboratory, in 1925 the company entered the medical equipment field with the development of X-ray equipment, in 1927 it developed and sold radios, and in 1945 it developed and sold fluorescent lamps.

オランダにあるヨーロッパ最大の電機メーカー。フィリップス社と略称。本社アイントホーフェン。1891年フィリップスGerard Leonard Frederik Philips(1858‐1942)が白熱電球の生産を目的として設立したPhilips & Co.がその前身。1912年に現社名(直訳すればフィリップス白熱電球会社)となる。　14年にG.ホルストにより研究室が開設され，25年にはX線装置の開発により医療機器分野に進出，27年にはラジオを，45年には蛍光灯を開発･販売している。
