...In the 19th century, Comte Antoine d'Aure (1798-1863), Viscount of the Saumur Cavalry School in France, advocated flexible riding, while François Baucher (1805-73) advocated formal riding, thus laying the foundations of modern equestrianism. With the addition of improvements to riding techniques by Italian Captain Federico Caprilli, equestrianism was established as a sport, and was adopted as an official event at the 5th Stockholm Olympic Games in 1912.
