1724‐55 French bandit. Born in Saint-Étienne-de-Saint-Joare, a town in the Dauphiné region. His father was a horse merchant. Mandran followed his father's business and supplied military horses and provisions to the French army on the Italian front during the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). However, he fell victim to a scheme by tax collectors and was unable to receive payment, losing most of his family fortune. This led Mandran to develop a resentment towards tax collectors and to become a bandit, smuggling tobacco and salt, which were their monopoly.
