[1] (noun) A mysterious story. A suspicious story. A creepy or frightening story. Especially a story about monsters or ghosts. ※Tangihon, Tounen Chinwa (1760), preface: “If you close your ears to ghost stories (kwaidan) ” ※Bunmei Kaika (1873-74), first by Kato Yuichi, “Only those who are unknown love ghost stories (kwaidan) and strange tales” [2] (Original title: Kwaidan) A collection of short stories. Written by Koizumi Yakumo. Published in both the UK and the US in 1904 ( Meiji 37 ). It contains 17 ghost stories and strange tales such as “Mimi-nashi Hoichi,” “Mujina,” and “Yuki-onna,” and three others, all based on Japanese classics and legends such as “Kokin Chomonshu” and “Bukkyo Hyakka Zenshu.”
