1874‐1947 Russian painter, thinker, and explorer. Also known as Roerich. After graduating from St. Petersburg University in 1897 and the Academy of Fine Arts in 1898, he studied in Paris. After returning to Russia, he began his career as a painter, and preferred to seek subjects in archaeology and the ancient Slavic world. In the 1910s, he also broke new ground in church murals and mosaics, and stage decorations. After leaving Russia in 1918 and wandering around Europe, he embarked on a major expedition from 1924 to 1928 with his wife Elena and his eldest son, Yurii Nikolaevich Rerikh (1902-60), a Tibetologist, through the Karakoram Mountains, the Tarim Basin, Altai, Mongolia, and the Tibetan Plateau, leading to Sikkim.
