1874‐1947
Russian painter, thinker, and explorer. Also known as Roerich. After graduating from St. Petersburg University in 1897 and the Academy of Fine Arts in 1898, he studied in Paris. After returning to Russia, he began his career as a painter, and preferred to seek subjects in archaeology and the ancient Slavic world. In the 1910s, he also broke new ground in church murals and mosaics, and stage decorations. After leaving Russia in 1918 and wandering around Europe, he embarked on a major expedition from 1924 to 1928 with his wife Elena and his eldest son, Yurii Nikolaevich Rerikh (1902-60), a Tibetologist, through the Karakoram Mountains, the Tarim Basin, Altai, Mongolia, and the Tibetan Plateau, leading to Sikkim.

ロシアの画家，思想家，探検家。リョーリヒともいう。1897年ペテルブルグ大学，98年美術アカデミーを卒業後，パリに留学。帰国後画家として出発，好んで考古学および古代スラブ世界に画題を求めた。1910年代には教会の壁画とモザイク，舞台装飾にも新境地を開いた。18年以降ロシアを出，ヨーロッパ諸国を放浪した後，24‐28年には妻エレナと長男のチベット学者ユーリーYurii Nikolaevich Rerikh(1902‐60)とともに，カラコルム山脈，タリム盆地，アルタイ，モンゴル，チベット高原を経てシッキムに至る大探検を行った。
