A freshwater fish of the Cyprinidae family (illustration). It has many local names, such as Haya, Honbaya (Tokyo), Kuki (Gunma), Aiso (Tochigi Prefecture, especially during spawning season), Ida (Kyushu), Jako, Haijako (Iwate Prefecture), Zako (Niigata Prefecture), Oogai, Oogee (Miyagi Prefecture, mixed with Malta), Akauo (Nagano Prefecture, spawning season), and Akahara (Niigata Prefecture, spawning season). The dialect names Akauo and Akahara come from the prominent red vertical stripes that appear on the sides of the body during spawning season. コイ目コイ科の淡水魚(イラスト)。ハヤ,ホンバヤ(東京都),クキ(群馬県),アイソ(栃木県。とくに産卵期),イダ(九州),ジャコ,ハイジャコ(岩手県),ザコ(新潟県),オオガイ,オオゲエ(宮城県。マルタと混称),アカウオ(長野県。産卵期),アカハラ(新潟県。産卵期)など地方名が多い。アカウオ,アカハラなどの方言は産卵期に体側などに現れる赤い縦帯が目だつことによる。日本では北海道から九州の南端近くまでのほぼ全土に分布。
