Štúr (English spelling)

Japanese: シュトゥール - しゅとぅーる(英語表記)L'udovít Štúr
Štúr (English spelling)

Slovak poet, linguist, and leader of the Slovak national awakening movement. After graduating from the Evangelical School in Pozsony (now Bratislava) (1833), he studied philosophy, linguistics, and history at the University of Halle (1838-40). During his studies, he was influenced by German romanticism, and after returning to Slovakia, he created a literary language based on the central Slovak dialect (1844), and edited the newspaper supplement The Tatra Eagle (1846) with his fellow Slovaks Josef Miloslav Hurban (1817-88) and Michael Miloslav Hodža (1811-70). He worked to enlighten the Slovak people by publishing collections of Slavic folk songs and folk tales. In March 1848, he made ethnic demands to the Hungarian government and was pursued by the authorities. In June of the same year, he attended the Slavic Congress in Prague and complained about the oppression of the Slovaks by the Hungarians. Later, he leaned towards Pan-Russianism, which sought to unify Russia as the leader of the Slavs.
