The Ataka checkpoint, located in Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture, was a key point for land and sea traffic along the coast of the Sea of Japan, and is also mentioned in the Engishiki. It is said that the checkpoint was established by order of Minamoto no Yoritomo. The Gikeiki records that Minamoto no Yoshitsune passed through here on his way down to Mutsu while being pursued by Yoritomo, and the checkpoint is famous for the Noh play Ataka. The site of the checkpoint has already submerged underwater. Source: Obunsha Japanese History Dictionary, Third Edition About Obunsha Japanese History Dictionary, Third Edition |
