A mollusc of the Chiton class and family Cootidae with no shell visible on its back. The shell is about 20cm long, 10cm wide and 2cm bulge, with the largest species reaching a length of 43cm. The upper part of the back is covered with a rough, velvety mantle, and the butterfly-shaped white shells lined up in front and back are hidden underneath. These shells are sold under the name Kochogai at tourist spots in Hokkaido. The underside has broad yellow-orange feet that attach to rocks and crawl gently. There are many gills in the depressions between the feet and the mantle. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
