...Most of the eruptions are strombolian eruptions accompanied by lava flows. Its history of activity is extremely old, and in Greek mythology it is said to be smoke from the workshop of the god of blacksmithing, Hephaestus, or the Cyclops, or Enceladus or Typhon, who was imprisoned under the mountain by Zeus. The Greek name Aitnē comes from aitho (meaning "to shine, to burn"). There are more than 80 records of eruptions from 475 BC (a record from 693 BC is also said to be Etna, but has not been confirmed) to the present day, and in the eruption of 396 BC, the Carthaginian army attempting to invade Catania was stopped by a 40km-long lava flow.
