Kitao School - Kitaoha

Japanese: 北尾派 - きたおは

A school of ukiyo-e artists founded by Kitao Shigemasa (1739-1820) in the late Edo period. Shigemasa was popularly known as Kyugoro, and later Sasuke. His pen names included Karan and Kosuisai. He taught himself painting. In addition to creating portraits of beautiful women and ukiyō-e in collaboration with Katsukawa Shunshō and others, he also tried his hand at picture books. Shigemasa's students included Kitao Masanobu (1761-1816), who was famous as a comic storyteller under the name Sankyōden, and Kitao Masayoshi (1761-1824), who created illustrations for kibōshi, warrior pictures, ukiyō-e and other works, and later took the name Kuwagata Keisai.

江戸時代後期の北尾重政 (1739～1820) を祖とする浮世絵師の一派。重政は俗称久五郎，のち佐助。号は花藍，紅翠斎など。独学で画技を学ぶ。勝川春章らと合作の美人画，浮絵のほか，絵本類にも手を染める。重政の門下には山東京伝の名で戯作者として有名な北尾政演 (1761～1816) ，黄表紙の挿絵や武者絵，浮絵などに多方面な制作をし，のち鍬形蕙斎と名のった北尾政美 (1761～1824) らがいる。
