Sennin Pass - Sennin Pass

A pass on the border between Kamaishi City and Tono City in the southeast of Iwate Prefecture. It is 887 meters above sea level. It is a pass in the Kitakami Highlands and was a transportation route connecting the Pacific coast with the inland. It was a difficult place to cross, so people had to cross on foot and luggage was carried by iron cable. The expressway used to use the prefectural road that crosses Fuefuki Pass 13 kilometers north, but in 1959 (Showa 34), the Sennin Tunnel (2,504 meters), a toll road on National Route 283, was opened north of the pass (now free), significantly shortening the distance between Kamaishi and Tono. In 2007 (Heisei 19), a bypass of National Route 283 was opened through the Shin-Sennin Tunnel south of the pass, which leads to Sumita Town in Kesen County, further shortening the distance. The area around the pass is a famous spot for viewing autumn leaves.

岩手県南東部、釜石市(かまいしし)と遠野市(とおのし)の境界にある峠。標高887メートル。北上(きたかみ)高地の峠で、太平洋岸と内陸部を結ぶ交通路であった。難所であり、人は徒歩で越え、荷物は鉄索で運ばれた。自動車道は13キロメートル北方の笛吹峠(ふえふきとうげ)を越える県道を利用していたが、1959年（昭和34）峠の北方を国道283号の有料道路である仙人トンネル（2504メートル）が通じるようになり（現在は無料）、釜石―遠野間は大幅に短縮された。なお、2007年（平成19）に峠の南方の新仙人トンネルで気仙(けせん)郡住田町に抜ける国道283号のバイパスが開通し、さらに短縮された。峠付近は紅葉の名所。
