A genus of dicotyledonous plants in the Myricaceae family. There is only one extant species in the genus Comptonia, which is a deciduous small shrub found in eastern North America. It was widely distributed in the Northern Hemisphere in the mid-Tertiary period, surviving until the late Miocene in Europe and the early Pliocene in Japan. The leaves are often lanceolate and divided into small lobes resembling the pinnae of a fern. Each lobe has two to four lateral veins extending directly from the mid-vein. In Japan, it is abundant in the Daijima-type flora of the mid-Miocene. C. yanagisawae with 16 to 20 lobes, known as the Comptonia - Liquidambar flora, has been reported from the Oligocene of the Shirasui Group of the Joban Coalfield, C. naumannii with 11 to 16 lobes from the Miocene of the Utsuto Formation in Akita Prefecture, and C. kidoi with 7 to 11 lobes from the Early Pliocene of the Oriwatari Formation in Yamagata Prefecture.
