A town in Ashoro District, eastern Hokkaido. The eastern part of the town is part of Akan National Park. It is the largest town in Japan in terms of area. Forestry and agriculture/livestock are the main industries. The town also does woodworking and freshwater fish processing. It is located at the western entrance to Akan National Park.
