Emil Staiger

Swiss literary historian. A leading researcher in the field of spiritual history, which dominates German literary studies. He opened up a unique field in his method of interpreting works, centering on "time" and "style." He is known for his elegant academic style, which combines a precise sense of language, ontological thinking that owes much to Heidegger, and a historical understanding that respects the classics. His representative works include "The Fundamental Concepts of Poetics" (1946) and "Goethe" in three volumes (1952-59). He served as a professor at the University of Zurich from 1943.

スイスの文芸史家。ドイツ文芸学の主流を占める精神史研究の第一人者。「時間」と「様式」を主軸とする作品解釈の方法に独自の境地を開く。緻密(ちみつ)な言語感覚、ハイデッガーに負うところ多い存在論的思考、そして古典尊重の歴史認識が総合された典雅な学風が特色。『詩学の根本概念』（1946）、『ゲーテ』3巻（1952～59）が代表的著作。1943年よりチューリヒ大学教授を務めた。
