Synoptic Gospels

The four Gospels of the New Testament (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) describe the life and teachings of Jesus, but the first three share many commonalities in content, vocabulary, and structure. However, there are numerous differences, large and small, between these three Gospels, which has raised the question of the relationship between the three as documents, and the contents of the three Gospels have often been arranged in three columns for observation and study. For this reason, these three Gospels are given the name Synoptic Gospels. The problem of the relationship between the three Gospels as documents is called the Synoptic Gospels problem.

新約聖書の4福音書 (マタイ，マルコ，ルカ，ヨハネ) はイエスの生涯と教説を述べているが，そのうち前3者は記述内容，語句，構成に一致共通するところが多い。他方またこれらの3福音書間には大小無数の異同が存在するところから，3者間の文献としての関連いかんの問題が提起され，しばしばその内容を3欄に並べて観察研究することが行われた。ここからこの3福音書に共観福音書の名が与えられている。3者間の文献的関連の問題は共観福音書問題という。
