One of the Altaic ethnic groups. Linguistically speaking, the Mongolian people are the descendants of people who speak or once spoke Mongolian languages. They mainly live throughout Mongolia, in the Inner Mongolia (Mongolia) Autonomous Region and the Xinjiang Uyghur (Weigur) Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China, and in the Republic of Buryatia and the Republic of Kalmykia of the Russian Federation. They also live in parts of the Chinese provinces of Jilin, Heilongjiang, Gansu, and Qinghai, as well as in Afghanistan. Their overall population is small, numbering just 4.8 million in China (1990 statistic), 2.156 million in Mongolia (1992, including Kazakhs), 250,000 in the Republic of Buryatia (1989), and 146,000 in the Republic of Kalmykia (1989).
