One of the Altaic ethnic groups. Linguistically speaking, the Mongolian people are the descendants of people who speak or once spoke Mongolian languages. They mainly live throughout Mongolia, in the Inner Mongolia (Mongolia) Autonomous Region and the Xinjiang Uyghur (Weigur) Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China, and in the Republic of Buryatia and the Republic of Kalmykia of the Russian Federation. They also live in parts of the Chinese provinces of Jilin, Heilongjiang, Gansu, and Qinghai, as well as in Afghanistan. Their overall population is small, numbering just 4.8 million in China (1990 statistic), 2.156 million in Mongolia (1992, including Kazakhs), 250,000 in the Republic of Buryatia (1989), and 146,000 in the Republic of Kalmykia (1989).

アルタイ系の民族の一つ。言語学的にモンゴル系の諸言語(モンゴル諸語)を話すか，かつて話していた人々の子孫を指す。その主要な居住地は，モンゴル全域，中華人民共和国の内モンゴル(蒙古)自治区，新疆ウイグル(維吾爾)自治区，ロシア連邦のブリヤート共和国，カルムイク共和国である。このほか中国の吉林省，黒竜江省，甘粛省，青海省の一部，さらにはアフガニスタンにも居住している。人口は全体として少なく，中国に480万(1990統計)，モンゴルに215万6000(1992，ただしカザフ族を含む)，ブリヤート共和国に25万(1989)，カルムイク共和国に14万6000(1989)を数えるにすぎない。
