A former town in Yamamoto County facing the Sea of Japan in northwest Akita Prefecture. The town's name comes from the legend of the dragon of Lake Hachirogata. Rice and field crops are cultivated, and fishing has shifted from catching to aquaculture. In March 2006, the town merged with Kotogaoka Town and Yamamoto Town in Yamamoto County to become Mitane Town in Yamamoto County. 38.66 km2 . 7,437 people (2003).
