A state in south-central Austria. It has an area of 16,387 km2 and a population of 1,208,000 (1995). The majority of the population are Germanic Bavarians, and 90% are Catholic. The state capital is Graz. The northern part consists of many mountain ranges and valleys that form the southeastern ridge of the Alps. The southern part is a hilly region that connects to the Hungarian Plain. Nicknamed the "Green State," 51% of the total area is forest and 26% pasture, and forestry and livestock farming are thriving. Since ancient times, the development of this region has been largely due to its abundant mineral resources, and it produces lignite, magnesite, graphite, talc, and gypsum in various places, including iron ore in the Erzberg, which accounts for 90% of the national production.
