Granular salt produced from a salt pond in the southwestern tip of Shanxi Province, China. The salt pond spans the three counties of Xie, Yuncheng, and Anyi, measuring 5km north to south and 40km east to west. It can be said that the Yellow River civilization was supported by the salt produced here. The highly saline water from the pond is sprayed onto salt fields built around it, and the salt crystallizes using the strong winds that blow, especially from summer to autumn. After the late Tang Dynasty, as the salt monopoly system was established, facilities were put in place and salt workers were organized into groups called keiko. Demand in Henan and Shaanxi was met by dissolved salt for generations to come. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
