Battle of Fujishima

Japanese: 藤島の戦 - ふじしまのたたかい

In 1338 (Engen 3 | Ryakuo 1), a battle took place near Fujishima in Yoshida County, Echizen Province (present-day Fukui City) between the forces of Nitta Yoshisada, who supported the Southern Court, and Shibata Katsune, who supported the Ashikaga. Yoshisada was killed in action during this battle. Having escaped from Kanazaki Castle in the same province prior to its fall in March of the previous year, Yoshisada based himself in Somayama Castle, the residence of Uryu Tamotsu, a local lord, and opposed Shibata Takatsune, the guardian of Echizen, who was based in Asuwa Castle in the same province. According to the Taiheiki, Yoshisada, with the majority of the monks of Heisenji Temple in the same province and many local lords of Kaga Province on his side, attacked Takatsune's forces, and in February of that year he occupied Fuchu (Takefu City) in the same province.

1338年(延元3｜暦応1)越前国吉田郡藤島(現，福井市)付近で行われた，南朝方新田義貞軍と足利方斯波高経（しばたかつね）軍との戦闘。この戦いで義貞は討死する。前年3月の同国金崎城陥落に先立って同城を脱出した義貞は，同国国人瓜生保（うりゆうたもつ）の居城杣山（そまやま）城に拠って，同国足羽（あすわ）城に拠る越前守護斯波高経に対抗した。《太平記》によると，義貞は同国平泉寺（へいせんじ）衆徒の過半や加賀国人多数を味方にして高経軍を攻め，この年2月同国府中(武生市)を占領した。
