This refers to financing conducted in foreign currencies such as dollars or pounds, and is called this to distinguish it from domestic yen financing. The term foreign currency financing is used in a wide range of applications, including (1) local loans (→ local financing) for import and export financing to Japan, given to overseas branches or local subsidiaries of Japanese trading companies, (2) shippers' usance, whereby a seller in the United States or the United Kingdom is granted a payment deferral by issuing a time-limited bill, and (3) domestic loans or self-bank usance, where a foreign currency loan is made to an importer in Japan using the foreign currency funds of an exchange bank itself.
