Born: 30 November 1508, Padua Died: August 19, 1580. An Italian architect who represents the late Renaissance in Vicenza. He started out as a stonemason and sculptor, but under the patronage of his fellow poet Count of Turissino, he traveled to Rome to study and studied the ancient Roman architect Vitruvius' Ten Books on Architecture and Roman ruins in depth. After returning to his hometown, he designed many palaces and mansions, and the Villa Rotonda is his representative work from this period. He was active mainly in Venice from 1560 onwards, and contributed to the construction of the city's finest buildings, such as the Basilica of San Giorgio Maggiore and the Basilica of Il Redentore. One of his later works is known for the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza. He also wrote books such as The Ancient Ruins of Rome and The Four Books of Architecture, and had a great influence on neoclassical architecture in 18th century England.
