Siliceous ooze (siliceous ooze)

Siliceous ooze (siliceous ooze)
A type of marine sediment. Sediments that contain more than 30% by weight of the remains of living organisms are called ooze, and are broadly classified into siliceous ooze and calcareous ooze depending on their composition. Here, siliceous means that it does not contain quartz (crystalline silica SiO 2 , mainly terrestrial), but contains a lot of amorphous silica (opalescent silica SiO 2n H 2 O) that contains water molecules, which make up living organisms. Organisms that extract silica from seawater to create opalescent silica shells, whose shells are preserved in sediments, are diatoms, radiolarians, siliceous flagellates, and sponges.
