Kiku Peninsula

Japanese: 企救半島 - きくはんとう
Kiku Peninsula

A peninsula located at the northeastern tip of Kyushu Island. It is about 15 km long and 5 km wide. It borders the Kanmon Strait and the Suo-Nada Sea, and is part of Moji Ward, Kokura Minami Ward, and Kokura Kita Ward in Kitakyushu City. Its main peak is Mount Adachi (598 m), and it is made up of the Kiku Mountains, where mesozoic strata are widely distributed. The west side has a straight coastline with steep fault cliffs, and the city developed from the narrow coastal lowland to the mountainside. In 1953 (Showa 28), it suffered great damage from torrential rains. The east side has a gentle slope, and the coastline is a ria coast with many bends, and small alluvial lowlands have developed. It was an agricultural and fishing region, but in recent years, large-scale land reclamation work is underway near Hishakda and Tsunemi as part of the Ura Moji Comprehensive Development Plan. Mekari Park, facing Hayatomo Seto in the north, is blessed with a great view and is included in the Setonaikai National Park, and is famous as the site of the Genpei War. The national highway tunnel and the Kanmon Bridge connect the area to Honshu, and the Sanyo Main Line and Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen lines connect the area to Honshu via an undersea tunnel, making it a key transportation hub in Kyushu.
