Main sequence star

A star in the stage where nuclear reactions are occurring in the center, fusing hydrogen into helium. A star (protostar) that has just been born from interstellar gas first undergoes gravitational contraction, and when the temperature at the center exceeds 10 million K, nuclear fusion of hydrogen begins. When the rate of nuclear energy generation and the rate of energy release from the surface of the star due to light become roughly equal, gravitational contraction stops and the star settles into the main sequence stage. A star spends about 90% of its life as a main sequence star until the hydrogen in its center is consumed. The Sun is also in this stage, and its life as a main sequence star is estimated to be about 10 billion years. Among main sequence stars, the more massive the star, the higher its luminosity and surface temperature. Therefore, when arranged on an HR diagram, they form a belt-like series from high luminosity and high temperature to low luminosity and low temperature. This series is called the main sequence.

中心部で水素がヘリウムに融合される核反応がおこっている段階の恒星のこと。星間ガスから生まれたばかりの星(原始星)は、まず重力収縮し、中心部の温度が1000万Kを超えると水素の核融合が始まる。この核エネルギーの発生率と星の表面からの光によるエネルギー放出率とがほぼ等しくなると重力収縮は止まり、主系列星の段階に落ち着く。星は中心部の水素が消費されてしまうまでの間、その一生の約90%を主系列星として過ごす。太陽もこの段階にあり、その主系列星としての寿命は約100億年と推定されている。主系列星のなかでは、質量が大きい星ほど光度も表面温度も高い。そのためHR図上に並べると、高光度・高温度から低光度・低温度へ帯状の系列をつくる。この系列が主系列とよばれている。
