A continental polar air mass that occurs in Siberia and northeastern China in winter. It is 2 to 3 kilometers thick, has a strong inversion layer above it, and is very stable. However, when it reaches the Sea of Japan or the East China Sea, large amounts of heat and water vapor are supplied from the relatively high water surface, causing it to rapidly change and become unstable, resulting in the formation of cumulus and cumulonimbus clouds. When it is forced to rise by the backbone mountain range, it instantly resolves its instability, bringing heavy rain and snow to the windward side of the Sea of Japan and good dry weather to the leeward side of the Pacific Ocean. This is the weather distribution that is evident in Japan's winters.
