The original meaning is "song". In 16th and 17th century Italy, this name was given to works that were instrumental arrangements of French chansons (canzone francese), or independent works based on that style. It was also called canzone alla francese or canzon da sonar (canzona for ensemble). This term first appeared in a collection of songs published by M. A. Cavazzoni in 1523, and in solo pieces for lute and keyboard instruments, from the stage of adding rich ornamentation to the original music, pieces were created that developed a lively rhythmic theme with the repetition of the same note ♩♩ using imitative counterpoint. This form, which reached its peak with Frescobaldi, was transmitted to Germany via Froberger and contributed to the establishment of the fugue. On the other hand, in the magnificent instrumental ensembles of the Venetian school (G. Gabrieli, Banchieri) that appeared towards the end of the 16th century, each section was clearly separated by changes in meter, and later became independent as an individual movement, playing an important role in the development of the sonata from the second half of the 17th century onwards.
