Compounds of manganese and sulfur, mainly mono- and disulfides. [Manganese(II) sulfide] Chemical formula: MnS. It exists in three modifications: α, β, and γ. When ammonium sulfide is added to an aqueous solution of manganese(II) salts, the resulting pale pink precipitate is a mixture of β and γ forms and contains a large amount of water. If this is left in an aqueous solution of ammonium sulfide, it turns into the green α form. The α form occurs naturally as manganite. Green crystals. Cubic crystal system. Sodium chloride structure. Specific gravity: 3.99. Melting point: 1610°C (in vacuum). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
