Chemical formula: MnS. It exists in three modifications: α, β, and γ. When ammonium sulfide is added to an aqueous solution of manganese(II) salts, the resulting pale pink precipitate is a mixture of β and γ forms and contains a large amount of water. If this is left in an aqueous solution of ammonium sulfide, it turns into the green α form. The α form occurs naturally as manganite. Green crystals. Cubic crystal system. Sodium chloride structure. Specific gravity: 3.99. Melting point: 1610°C (in vacuum).

　化学式MnS。α,β,γの3変態がある。マンガン(II)塩の水溶液に硫化アンモニウムを加えて得られる淡紅色の沈殿はβ形とγ形の混合物で多量の水を含む。これを硫化アンモニウム水溶液中に放置すると緑色のα形となる。α形は天然にセンマンガン鉱として産する。緑色結晶。立方晶系。塩化ナトリウム型構造。比重3.99。融点1610℃(真空中)。
