Died April 24, 1947. New York. American female writer. She moved to Nebraska at the age of nine, where she became familiar with the local culture and the lives of immigrants from various countries. In 1903, she published her first collection of poems, April Twilights, followed by a collection of short stories, The Troll Garden (1905). Influenced by the female writer Jewett, she began to turn her attention to the environment in which she grew up, and discovered her original themes in O Pioneers! She then established her fame with One of Ours (22), for which she received the Pulitzer Prize. Other novels with strong regional flavor include A Lost Lady (23), Death Comes for the Archbishop (27), Lucy Gayheart (35), and Sapphira and the Slave Girl (40).
