Shinano Mainichi Shimbun - Shinano Mainichi Shimbun

Nagano Prefecture's leading daily newspaper. Its predecessor was the Nagano Shinpo, first published in July 1873 (Meiji 6). It changed titles and split up many times in the beginning, but in 1890 it was reorganized as a joint-stock company and the foundations of the company were laid. Since then, it has promoted freedom and progress under a company motto of strict neutrality, with editors such as Yamaji Aizan, Kiryu Yuyu, Kazami Akira, and Machida Shishiro. During World War II, it absorbed and merged various newspapers in the prefecture to become one newspaper per prefecture, and continued to develop after the war on that foundation. In 1961 (Showa 36), it achieved full mechanization using kanji teletype, the first in Japan. Since then, it has striven to improve and develop the newspaper production process, such as putting the computerized phototypesetting system COSMOS into practical use (1979), completing an energy-saving factory (1980), and introducing the New Cosmos production system, which features automatic typesetting technology using AI (artificial intelligence). It boasts an overwhelming share of circulation within Nagano Prefecture, with a circulation of approximately 484,300 copies for the morning edition and approximately 46,200 copies for the evening edition (April 2011).
