Champs-Élysées (English spelling) Avenue des Champs-Élysées

A boulevard in the west of Paris (8th arrondissement), the capital of France. It stretches from Place de la Concorde in the east to Place Charles de Gaulle (formerly known as Place de l'Etoile) in the west. It is 1,880 meters long and 70 meters wide. It is lined with beautiful rows of horse chestnut and plane trees. 700 meters east of the midpoint, Rond Point des Champs-Élysées, there is a wide green belt between the Cour la Reine, which runs along the Seine River, and the Avenue Gabriel, where the Elysée Palace is located. To the south are the Petit Palais (art museum) and the Grand Palais (science museum), which were built for the 1900 Universal Exposition, and to the north is a theater. The area west of Rond Point was once filled with aristocratic residences, but has now become a bustling downtown area lined with many famous shops, restaurants, theaters, and airline offices. Levelling of the ground began under the orders of Colbert in 1664, and in 1709 it was named the Champs-Élysées (meaning the plains of paradise). In 1724 a promenade was opened up to the hill of Chaillot (Etoile).

フランスの首都パリ西部（第8区）の大通り。東はコンコルド広場から西はシャルル・ドゴール広場（旧称エトアール広場）に至る。長さ1880メートル、幅70メートル。マロニエとプラタナスの美しい並木が続く。中間点のロン・ポアン・デ・シャンゼリゼから東の700メートルには、セーヌ川の河畔を通るクール・ラ・レーヌとエリゼ宮のあるガブリエル通りとの間に幅広い緑地帯がある。南には1900年の万国博覧会のために建設されたプチ・パレ（美術館）とグラン・パレ（科学博物館）があり、北には劇場がある。ロン・ポアン以西は、かつては貴族の住宅が多かったが、多くの有名商店、レストラン、劇場、航空会社の営業所などが建ち並ぶ繁華街となっている。1664年コルベールの命により整地が始まり、1709年シャンゼリゼ（楽園の原の意）と命名され、1724年シャイヨー（エトアール）の丘まで遊歩道が開かれた。
