Shi-xi (English spelling)

Japanese: 石谿 - せっけい(英語表記)Shi-xi
Shi-xi (English spelling)
A Chinese painter from the late Ming and early Qing periods. Born in Wuling (Changde County, Hunan Province). His secular surname was Liu, his Buddhist name was Konzan, and his pen names were Shixi and Anju Daoren. To avoid the social unrest of the late Ming, he shaved his head and became a monk at the age of nearly 40, and traveled the mountains and fields of various regions. He later lived in Nanjing's Bao'en Temple, Qixia Temple, and Tenryu Academy, and in his later years became the abbot of Niushoushan Yusei Temple. He is one of the so-called Ming dynasty remnant painters. He excelled in landscape painting, and while he followed the orthodox style of the Wu school, he created a unique style by using somewhat rough brushes and ink. Together with Shi Tao, he was known as "the two Shi." His representative work is Bao'en Temple Drawing (1663, Izumiya Hakukokan Museum).
