...The distinctive feature of this scholarship is that it mainly uses the Commentaries on the Thirteen Classics as material, but also covers historical texts and the writings of various scholars, places great importance on the exegesis of the Han and Tang dynasties, and strives to revive and perfect the application of Xu Xue (Xu Shen's study of ancient characters) and Zheng Xuan's commentaries on the classics, accumulating collation and verification notes and correspondence between researchers. The so-called study of facts in old China, that is, the study of the pursuit of truth through the empirical method of analogy and induction, is represented by this Qing Dynasty Sinology. The term "Sinology" is also used as a general term for Chinese scholarship in Japan, in contrast to the Japanese Classics....
