It is the second book of the Old Testament after the Pentateuch, and, together with Deuteronomy, Judges I and II, Samuel I and II, and Kings, belongs to the Jewish historical and legal tradition. It is the work of a Deuteronomistic historian, compiled mainly from Deuteronomistic sources, and is a historical work, but there are many parts that do not correspond to archaeological facts. Together with the Pentateuch, it is also called the Six Books of Moses (→ Hexateuch). It is believed to have been written around 550 BC during the Babylonian captivity. The Book of Joshua, named after the main character, is a record of the time of Joshua, the first prophet of the Jewish canon, and tells the story of the Israelite conquest of Canaan, the Promised Land. The book contains many ancient traditions, but they are influenced by the personal views of Bible historians.
The book of Joshua is divided into three parts: the conquest of Canaan (chapters 1-12), the distribution of the land among the Israelites (chapters 13-22), and Joshua's farewell address and death (chapters 23-24). Because the possession of Canaan was the fulfillment of the oft-repeated promise to Abraham, the father of the Israelites, Joshua has usually been seen as the completion of a literary sequence consisting of the first six books of the Bible. Theologians who hold this view have attempted to find in Joshua a record of the same material found in the previous books. However, there is now a growing tendency to see Joshua as the beginning of a continuing history in the succeeding books.
The author of Joshua lived at a time when the Israelites lost the land they had once possessed and were taken into Babylonian captivity. His history is therefore colored by a desire to regain their homeland. The first conquest of the Promised Land is described with great enthusiasm, and biblical historians repeatedly emphasize that it was with the help of Yahweh. The distribution of land to the various tribes includes territories that never belonged to Israel or that were acquired by Israel much later. This also reflects the hope of biblical historians that the former glory of the nation of Israel will one day be restored. Joshua's farewell speech (chap. 24) explains the conditions under which Yahweh will protect Israel in the land of Canaan. The key point is this: "If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, then the Lord will bring evil on you again after he has done you good, and he will completely destroy you" (24:20).
