Shan people - Shan

Japanese: シャン族 - シャンぞく(英語表記)Shan
Shan people - Shan
An ethnic group that lives from the Shan Plateau in northern Myanmar to the mountainous region in the northern Indochina Peninsula and further to the mountainous region in southern China. They are also called the Tai-Yai people. Their language belongs to the Western Tai family. Their population is estimated at over 3.5 million. They are broadly divided into three groups: the Amti Shan in northern Myanmar, which borders Assam in India, the Shan in China, and the Shan in Myanmar. Their occupation is settled agriculture, growing rice using irrigation. Their social organization does not have a single lineage of kinship groups like clans, and the village organization unit is a nuclear family (small family) consisting of a married couple and their unmarried children. There are also hereditary castes of nobles, commoners, and lower classes. The Shan are linguistically and culturally homogeneous, but there are regional differences in their religious beliefs, with Hinduism being practiced in China and Myanmar and Hinduism in Assam. In addition, animism called Phi and Nat is deeply rooted in the Shan.
