A small island off the west coast of central Malay Peninsula. Its Malay name is Pinang. Together with the area on the opposite shore, it forms the Malaysian state of Pinang. Covered in forests, it produces rubber, rice, tin, and other products. Its capital is the port city of Penang (formerly known as George Town) on the northeast coast, with a population of 219,603 (1991). In 1786, it was ceded to the Lord of Kedah by Britain, and developed into the Malay Peninsula's first British colony. It is now one of Southeast Asia's leading international beach resorts.
