A city in the province of Madrid in central Spain. Population 145,320 (1987). In Roman times it was called Complutum, and its current name comes from the Islamic period. The university founded by Cisneros in 1508 (moved to Madrid in 1836) welcomed Erasmus and other Spanish and international humanists, who produced the Polyglot Bible.
