Izumo Inoue Shrine

...A small evergreen tree of the Oleaceae family with sharp sawtooth leaves (illustration). There is a folk custom of inserting the branches and leaves into doorways at the beginning of each month to ward off evil spirits. Its Taiwanese name is Holly Tree. It can reach a height of 10m and a diameter of 30cm, with brownish gray-white bark and circular lenticels. The leaves are crosswise arranged in opposite directions, elliptical and 3-7cm long. In young trees, they have 1-4 pairs of large sawtooth teeth that end in a thorn, but in older trees, the edges are entire, thick and glossy, with translucent glandular dots scattered on the underside. In autumn, from October to November, they produce umbels of several flowers in the axils of the current year's branches, which are fragrant. ...
