It is now generally accepted that there are two types of leaves. The leaves of the club moss and the Chinese chive are microphylls, which originally formed protrusions on the surface of the stem, which developed to accommodate the branches of the vascular bundles and became complete lateral organs. Leaflets generally have simple veins and are said to have no gaps at the leaf scar, but there are exceptions.
